जब प्रथम विश्व युद्ध छिड़ गया तो बनच को उनके बाएं हाथ और खराब दृष्टि के कारण सैन्य सेवा से मुक्त कर दिया गया था।

युद्ध के दौरान वह क्राको में उस समय के सबसे प्रसिद्ध गणितज्ञों में से एक ह्यूगो स्टीनहॉस से मिले, और स्टीनहॉस उनके और उनकी क्षमताओं से मोहित हो गए, यह देखते हुए कि वे काफी हद तक स्व-सिखाया गया था।
